The 29th annual Big Bend Saltwater Classic is on the horizon! This one-of-a-kind fishing tournament takes place over Father’s Day weekend, June 16-17, and it’s a great way for angling aficionados to celebrate the bounty of the stunning Gulf of Mexico.

Experience a Popular North Florida Angler’s Tradition

The annual Big Bend Saltwater Classic has been a local tradition in the Florida panhandle for nearly 30 years. In fact, it is now the longest-running fishing tournament in what is known as the Big Bend region of Florida, which covers most of the central panhandle area.

The Big Bend Saltwater Classic was first created in 1989 by the Organization for Artificial Reefs, Inc., which is a non-profit group that works to support marine interests in the region. The competition quickly grew in popularity, and now several hundred anglers gather every Father’s Day weekend to enjoy the beautiful gulf waters off the Wakulla County coast and spend time with friends and family.

Numerous Different Divisions are Available

No matter what type of fish you like to pursue, the odds are there’s a category for you in the Big Bend Saltwater Classic. The Recreational Division features ten different fish categories in which you can compete, including species such as cobia, flounder, gag grouper, red grouper, redfish, and wahoo. First through third place winners in each fish category will receive a cash prize along with a plaque.

There’s also a Junior Division with specific fish categories for the younger anglers to compete in. Some of these species include black sea bass, kingfish, and Spanish mackerel, and the top performers across categories will receive a trophy and a special prize package.

Enjoy a Weekend Full of Events and Celebration

The event unofficially kicks off at the captain’s meeting on Wednesday, June 14 at 6:00 PM. This meeting will be held at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Tallahassee on Magnolia Drive, and participants are welcome to register there and pick up their registration materials. The fishing action itself begins at 5:30 AM on Friday morning, and it all concludes with the awards presentation at Shields Marina at 8:00 PM on Saturday, June 17.
